Life Goal

As of right now, I work for my granddad.  He owns a plumbing and electrical company in Calhoun.  My dad is a master’s licensed plumber.  I have been working with them since I was in the eighth grade off and on, so about a total of 7 years.  I don’t like plumbing all that much. It is definitely a whole lot nastier than electrical.  Electrical is what I love.  It can be very dangerous working with high voltage and big access panels.  I also worked for MME Inc doing commercial electrical work for a little over a year.  We actually wired the new state patrol post in Cartersville just down the road from the school.   We also did some dentist offices, warehouses, and the gem theatre in down town Calhoun.  It’s a very dangerous job to have and you have to be very cautious at all times.  I’m going to Georgia Highlands to get some of my core classes out of the way, and then I am going to transfer to Southern Poly and major in electrical engineering.  My goal is to obtain the engineering degree, and then eventually take over the family business and expand.  My best friend is also majoring in electrical engineering and we have talked about partnering up in business and expanding throughout the southeast.  Everyone has to start somewhere and if you ask me, we have got off to a pretty good start. It just seems like school is going to last an eternity, but I just keep telling myself, “It will all pay off in the end.”

2011 Hunting season

This past hunting season was a very successful one.  From September until January my free time consisted of sitting in a tree stand or sitting in a swamp or in a duck blind on a lake.  My girlfriend started hunting last year and we had bought her a new bow.  We used all summer to prepare for the season and have her ready for opening day.  She got really good with her bow and was ready to shoot her first deer.  On opening day of the 2011 bow season we saw a lot of deer but nothing ever came in close enough to shoot.  She had to work during the morning of the second day of the season so we planned on going back that afternoon.  Well on that afternoon about 20 minutes before dark we had some deer come in behind us eating acorns.  While I was focusing on those deer she started hitting me in the leg saying, “right here, right here!” as I looked there was a big five point cull buck coming down the trail that passed by our tree at about 30 yards.  I knew exactly what deer it was because I had it on my trail cam.  He had been a five pointer the past two years so I knew he needed to be taken out of the heard.  I told her to stand up and get ready.  She stood up and drew her bow, released and the arrow hit its mark.  She hit the deer perfect and he only ran about 75 yards.  That was her first deer ever and it was a very exciting moment.  After killing a few does with my bow rifle season finally opened.  The second week of November, some of my family, friends, and I loaded up and headed to South Georgia.  On the second afternoon there I killed the biggest deer I have ever killed in Georgia. It was a six and a half year old ten pointer. He scored 131-3/4 and field dressed 150 pounds.  A month later my dad, uncle, best friend and I went to Illinois to hunt for four days.  We all ended up taking really nice deer and coming home very successful.  From Christmas until now, my main focus has been on ducks and geese.  It is by far my favorite type of hunting.  My buddies and I kill a lot of birds.  As of right now we have killed 67 ducks and 113 geese during this season. There is one weekend left so maybe we can add a few more to those totals and close out a very successful year of hunting!

My Life

My name is Jarrett Ables.   I am 20 years old, and I graduated from Calhoun High School in 2009.  I’ve played sports my whole life.  I love golf, football, and baseball. I played all of these sports throughout school, but mainly concentrated on golf during High school.  I ended up having six different scholarship offers to play golf in college when I graduated.  I turned the scholarships down because I wanted to concentrate on my education and work at the same time.  Another big reason I didn’t go play golf in college is because I love hunting! Hunting is by far my favorite hobby. If I would’ve taken a scholarship I wouldn’t ever get to hunt because my time would’ve been taken up by the sport.  I grew up hunting; it has been in my family for many years.  I love to deer, duck, and turkey hunt.  I travel to a number of different states each year to hunt.  We have farms in Kentucky and Illinois. We also have 500 acres In Gordon County.  I live in Calhoun and have my whole life.  I am attending Georgia Highlands to finish up my core classes before I transfer to Southern Poly.  I am seeking a degree in Electrical Engineering.  My family owns a Plumbing and Electrical business. My dad is a master’s licensed plumber.  I plan on taking the state electrical test and obtaining my electrical license when I turn 21.  I’ve been helping with the business since I was in the eighth grade and I now work full time.  When I am not working I spend my afternoons in the gym.  I’m a member of Firehouse Gym in Calhoun.  I have a younger sister who is 17. She plans on attending the University of Alabama. Everyone in my family have always pulled for Alabama because my Granddad went to school there.  I must say I have been pretty happy since they we won our 14^th National Championship last Monday. Roll Tide!
